Match Report

Second half goals from Paul Heatley and Jordan Owens saw Crusaders past ten-man Carrick.

Following a narrow Boxing Day defeat to Larne, the ‘Gers arrived at Seaview with Nedas Maciulaitis back in the side after serving his one-game suspension.

Rangers were competitive in the first forty-five and registered the opening chance of the afternoon when Cameron Stewart met David Cushley’s deep corner-kick, but his header was parried at the near post by ‘keeper Jonny Tuffey before Josh Robinson cleared.

Former ‘Gers midfielder Lloyd Anderson then went close to netting against his former side; he charged down Joe Crowe’s pass and when the ball broke for Heatley, it was threaded through for Anderson who raced into the box one-on-one against Ross Glendinning, but dragged his low shot wide of the mark.

The hosts would create further openings for Owens and Ross Clarke who both shot off-target from good positions in the penalty area, leaving the game scoreless at the break.

It would take just four minutes into the second period for the deadlock to be broken, however.

Tuffey’s long punt forwards was flicked on by Owens, with Heatley getting in behind the visiting defence in the box to bring the ball down and compose himself before firing past Glendinning.

If the challenge of coming back from a goal down seemed hard enough, it was made all the more difficult on the hour mark as right-back Kurtis Forsythe was sent off after he hauled down Heatley for his second bookable offence of the day.

Five minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage to effectively seal the three points.

Billy Joe Burns took a touch before delivering a cross from the right flank which Owens got to ahead of his marker to turn in from twelve yards.

As Stuart King took the opportunity to give minutes to some of his promising young players in the closing stages, the game petered out for what was, ultimately, a comfortable Crusaders win.
