Match Report

Joe Crowe’s 59th minute goal saw Rangers victorious in a close-fought encounter at the Newry Showgrounds.

Stuart King had originally planned to stick with the same team that had tasted victory away to Ballymena United seven days prior, but an ankle injury carried by Lewis MacKinnon saw the defender replaced on the team sheet by Kurtis Forsythe ahead of kick-off.

Rangers made a promising start with a chance on four minutes as City full-back Noel Healy was caught under the ball, allowing Danny Purkis in behind on the right flank.

Purkis dribbled his way into the box before seeing a low, near post shot kept out by the combination of ‘keeper Steven Maguire’s outstretched leg and the upright.

Ben Tilney’s long throw-in then found Cameron Stewart who displayed good skill to keep hold of the ball amidst a crowd of Newry defenders before it eventually sat up for Curtis Allen whose acrobatic half volley was comfortably in the direction of Maguire who gathered.

At the other end, a miscued header from Albert Watson presented John McGovern with a glorious chance from 15 yards, however his first touch let him down and allowed the trio of Watson, Ben Tilney and Ross Glendinning to all come together and play their parts in denying his initial and rebound attempts.

It was early into the second period that the breakthrough arrived for the visitors.

A period of pressure in the City penalty area paid off as the ball was recycled out left to Maciulaitis whose low, driven cross to the far post was met by a first time, side-footed shot from Crowe which found the bottom corner just before the hour mark.

Crowe’s midfield partner Steven Gordon came so close to doubling Carrick’s advantage mere minutes later when he connected with David Cushley’s corner-kick at the front post but his headed effort went over the top.

Gary Boyle’s men came within an inch of an equaliser on 76 minutes as Stephen Moan’s free-kick was turned towards goal by substitute Adam Carroll, the ball coming back off the post to preserve Rangers’ lead.

Glendinning then had to get down low to hold Andy Martin’s curled, well-struck free-kick from the edge of the area.

While the ‘Gers were able to see the game out in its closing stages, striker Emmett McGuckin was disappointingly shown a straight red card in injury time after raising his hands to Moan in an off-the-ball incident.

However, his dismissal wouldn’t dampen Carrick’s celebrations at full time as they made back-to-back clean sheet wins ahead of a Boxing Day East Antrim Derby at home to Larne.
