Match Report

Two goals in two minutes from Nedas Maciulaitis and Danny Purkis completed a second half comeback to earn a first ever league victory at home to Glentoran.

Consecutive defeats to Ballymena United, Glenavon and Larne saw the ‘Gers come into this contest on a poor run of form.

Adding to that the depleted squad at Stuart King’s disposal with injuries, suspensions and other unavailabilities taking their toll, the task of toppling one of the division’s top teams appeared even more challenging on approach.

With just four minutes on the clock, it looked as though a difficult afternoon could be in store as the visitors took the lead.

Making their early pressure count, a corner-kick led to chaos in the Carrick penalty area as Shay McCartan and Junior both saw efforts blocked before the ball broke for captain Marcus Kane who struck a half volley into the corner of the net.

Warren Feeney’s side had chances to extend their advantage in the first period as McCartan, Bobby Burns and Niall McGinn all went close but solid goalkeeping from Ross Glendinning and determined defending from his backline kept the deficit to just one goal at the break.

As Ben Buchanan-Rolleston replaced Joe Crowe five minutes after the restart, Stuart King tweaked his side’s shape as they looked to get themselves back into the game.

Curtis Allen twice went close in under ten minutes, first seeing a deflected shot pushed over the top by Aaron McCarey before the ‘keeper had to backpedal to tip over his header from Ben Tilney’s long throw.

Capitalising on their foothold in the game, Rangers found an equaliser in the 69th minute.

Nedas Maciulaitis played the ball down the right to Danny Purkis who charged to the byline before attempting to square it to Allen.

McCarey got enough of a touch to divert the delivery from the striker’s path but Maciulaitis had continued his run into the box and was there to fire the loose ball into the open goal.

Just two minutes later, King’s side deservedly took the lead.

A long kick upfield from Glendinning wasn’t dealt with by Kane, allowing Allen to gain possession on the right-hand side of the penalty area.

He crossed towards Purkis at the far post whose initial header was blocked but when the ball fell to his feet, he coolly held off the grappling James Singleton to poke past McCarey at the near post.

From there the ‘Gers professionally saw the game out, with Man of the Match Mark Surgenor’s block on a Junior effort in the final minutes epitomising the performance of his side that fully warranted their victory.
