Match Report

A 90th minute penalty from David Cushley secured a late victory for the ‘Gers at a floodlit Loughview Leisure Arena.

Following a fully deserved draw against Linfield at Windsor Park, Rangers were looking for another positive performance and result coming into this home fixture that was being live streamed by BBC Sport NI.

Indeed it did prove to be a bright opening for a Carrick side that broke the deadlock on 16 minutes.

A neat interchange of play between Kurtis Forsythe and Danny Purkis unleashed the full-back down the right flank and he drove into the box before supplying a dangerous, low delivery across the face of goal that was turned into his own net by Caolan Marron.

Stuart King’s side had further chances to increase their advantage, starting with Ben Tilney’s shot from 25 yards that deflected off Ethan McGee and sent the ball looping towards the top corner only to be kept out by a fine fingertip save by Niall Morgan.

More good work down the right from Purkis then saw him beat his man and cross towards Nedas Maciulaitis in the middle but his first-time shot was kept out by the onrushing Morgan who then gathered.

The home side would be made to regret not taking their chances when Dungannon levelled just after the half-hour mark.

Adam Glenny’s punt forward down the left wasn’t dealt with by the Rangers backline, allowing Ethan Devine to find Joe Moore who saw his initial effort blocked by Ben Tilney before the ball kindly broke for him to follow up and slide it past Ross Glendinning and into the bottom corner.

Carrick really should have regained their lead in first half injury time as Josh Andrews clipped the ball into Curtis Allen who had the goal at his mercy but could only direct his header over the crossbar.

Rangers continued on the front foot in the second period as Maciulaitis floated a cross towards the back post where it was met by the head of Purkis, but his effort was well kept out by the diving Morgan.

Andrews could have grabbed his first goal for the Club later in the half but his shot lacked the power required to trouble the Swifts ‘keeper when one-on-one.

As the ‘Gers pressed hard for a winner with a flurry of corners in the closing stages and Morgan yet again continuing his heroics to keep the Swifts in the game, they finally got their golden chance in the 90th minute.

Cherry’s corner was cleared back out towards him and having won a foot race with Devine to the ball, the substitute was taken out by his opponent in the box giving referee Tony Clarke no choice but to point to the spot.

David Cushley stepped up to the mark and dispatched a powerful penalty high down the middle of the goal to seal a late victory for his team.
