Match Report

Ben Wilson grabbed a brace for Cliftonville as they inflicted a four-goal defeat on the ‘Gers.

Stuart King opted for the same side from the midweek success against Coleraine as he went in search of another result, this time at Solitude.

However, those hopes were dealt a blow after six minutes as a slip from Ben Buchanan-Rolleston allowed Rory Hale to get away from the defender down the left and cross low to Ben Wilson who side-footed in at the near post.

Danny Purkis’ flick on then found the run of Kyle Cherry but the midfielder’s drilled shot was just wide of the far upright as Rangers went in search of an equaliser.

It was Cliftonville, though, that doubled their advantage on 24 minutes. A penalty was awarded after Andy Mitchell caught Ronan Doherty in the area and it was Doherty who got himself on his feet again to dispatch the spot-kick high down the middle.

Wing-back Ben Tilney then got across to make an important block on Wilson’s effort from the edge of the area while at the other end, Cherry’s dipping effort from twenty-five yards skimmed the crossbar to land on the roof of the net.

A delivery into the Cliftonville box then saw adamant appeals from the Rangers players that defender Jamie Robinson had handled the ball but referee Lee Tavinder wasn’t convinced by the protests.

Just before the break, the Reds struck a third as Hale beat the offside trap down the left flank before crossing deep to Wilson at the far post who easily tucked in his second of the day.

The fourth for the hosts would come twenty minutes into the second period as a clearance from Ross Glendinning fell to the feet of Hale who volleyed in off the inside of the post from twenty-five yards.

From there on out, the closing stages of the game were quiet other than a Doherty effort from the edge of the area that floated past the post from the edge of the area with ten minutes remaining.

Rangers will have to regroup once more and look for improvements when they return to north Belfast on Tuesday evening to face Crusaders.
